ENERGY SUSPENSION FRONT SWAY BAR HOW-TO
(2002 6-Speed, 23mm)
(Click on each picture for large versions)
Tools Needed
- 14mm ratchet piece
- Jack stand
- Jack
1) Jack up car. Place on jack stand. You can do one at a time. (HINT: This job is done with the wheels off, so do not use ramps.)
2) The Front Sway bar bushings are right behind the wheel, at the end of the control arm.
3) With a 14mm Wratchet piece, simply take off the 2
bolts that are attached to the FSB Bushing bracket. May need a breaker bar
to get it started. Keep in mind the steering boot is there and you do not
want to rip it.
TIP: If you turn the steering wheel all the way to the left (for driver side...for
pass. you would turn it all the way to the right) the steering column will
turn in, pushing the boot back, and giving you MUCH more space to work with.
4) You've removed the bolts and the bracket, but now you need to remove the bushing. The FSB is pushing down onto it, so you need to lift up the FSB to give way. That's very easy. Simply put your jack (that's why you need the jack stand. you'll need to use your jack at this point) under the control arm and jack it up a bit. the control arm is attached to FSB and when you jack it up, the FSB will lift, giving you room to remove your bushing. The bushing has a slit, as you can see from the pictures in step 5. you simply open it and take it out.Keep in mind that the slit is towards the front of the car, you need to remember this when you put the new ES bushings on.
5) The pictures below show the various pieces involved in the FSB bushing replacement.
6) Slide new ES bushing in place (agian remember, slit is towards the front of the car) place back in correct location. Lower control arm via jack. Bushing will settle in place. Place bracket and bolts and tighten to spec. Put wheel on, tighten up, lower car, and do the same thing for the passenger side. You're done.
